Hiking & Trekking

For the keen hiker Sri Lanka’s mist covered mountain country offers fabulous opportunities. The mysterious Horton Plains national park offers some excellent hikes in an unusual environment characterized by forest patches, grasslands and some high altitude vegetation. When climbing the picturesque Sri Padha (Adam’s Peak) you begin your ascent at night in order to arrive at the top to witness the magical sunrise with the peak casting its mystic shadow on the cloud mountains below. The attractive area of Ella is renowned for its many walks including the Little Adams Peak, Ella/rock and the Namunukula Mountain range. And if you are in the Vicinity of Kandy, exploring the beautiful Knukles Range Heritage and Wilderness area will simply take your breath away. The region stretches an impressive 155sq.km with five major forest formations, a wide variety of rare and endemic flora and fauna and mountain scenery.

Cycling and Mountain Biking

If you prefer to get about on two wheels there are many interesting trails in the lowlands that take you through a beautiful landscape of tea, rubber and spice plantations. For those seeking more of a challenge, hill country locations such as the Knukles National Heritage and Wilderness area offer a number of steeper trails that are only suitable for more experienced cyclists.

Canoeing/ Kayaking

With 103 rievers and a wealth of swamps, lagoons and interconnected old canals, Sri Lanka provides no end of opportunities to try out this different and relaxing mode of transportation. Canoeists can marvel at ever-changing landscapes and a fascinating variety of flora and fauna.

White Water Rafting

This activity is great fun for first-timers and experts alike, with a wide range and grading of rapids on some of the Island’s more turbulent waters such as Kelani River. Kitulgala in the hill country, southwest of Kandy provides an ideal base from which many white water rafting trips take place.

Turtle Watching

Five of the eight species of remaining sea turtles today, regularly visit the sandy beaches of Sri Lanka to nest. In Sri Lanka all sea turtles and their products are fully protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance. Sea Turtles frequent the western coastline and areas famous for turtle watching, are beaches around Induruwa and Kosgoda. Induruwa has a Turtle Research Project and Kosgoda has a Turtle Center, Conservation Project, Hatchery and a Research Center as well.

Whale & Dolphin Watching

Sri Lanka is becoming a major spot for watching Whales and Dolphins. Dondra Point of down south in Sri Lanka is the main port of Whale Watching in Sri Lanka during December to April. Out of these months December, January and April are the peak months of sightings. During these months there is 95% chances of spotting Sperm Whales and great chances of spotting Blue Whales as their migration path is just off Dondra Point. Also there are good chances of spotting SpinnerDolphins also off Dondra. Accommodation can be easily arranged as Dondra point can be reach easily from Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa and Tangalle which are popular beaches. Kalpitiya is the best places if you are interested in seeing Dolphins. During November to March is the best season to go Dolphin watching off Kalpitiya. Whale and Dolphin watching is also possible during June to September off the eastern shores such as Trincomalee.

Surfing,Wind Surfing and Kite Surfing

Situated 220km East of Colombo, Arugam Bay is Currently listed as one of the top 10 surf sports in the world and played host to the prestigious Pro Surf Contest in 2011. The waves are at their best between April and September and surf lessons and equipment are both available on the beach. Hikkaduwa, Weligama and Mirissa are popular surf destinations on the West Coast offering high quality waves all year round.For those who enjoy water sports, the seaside town of Bentota, 65km South of Colombo offers a thrilling array from jet skiing and water-skiing to banana boating, windsurfing, kayaking and river cruising.Kite surfing is the latest extreme sport to hit Sri Lankan waters and lessons take place in Negombo, Kalpitiya and Arugam Bay.

Snorkelling and Diving

The warm water of Sri Lanka boast an impressive diving snorkelling scene and a large number of reliable PADI-certified diving schools scatter the coast, allowing you to obtain your divers license with great ease. You can explore an underwater wonderland of marine life, vibrant coral reefs and fascinating ship wrecks while accompanied by experienced instructors. The best spots for snorkelling and scuba diving are Hikkaduwa, Weligama and Bar Reef on the West and South Coast and Nilaveli and Arugam Bay on the East Coast.

Hot Air Ballooning

Hot air ballooning season is generally between the months of November to April – when weather conditions are ideal and pose no difficulty for ballooning. Many sites are available for hot air ballooning, with Kandalama, Dambulla and other areas in the cultural triangle being some of the most popular ballooning spots amongst many travellers.

Boat Safari In Madu River

Madu ganga is situated in Balapitiya, along the country’s southern coast , within the Galle District of the southern Province of Sri Lanka. The Madu River is very rich in biodiversity. It passes through the wet zone of Sri Lanka opening up into the large Madu Lagoon on its way to the Indian Ocean. The Madu River Safari is popular activity that has to be on the tour itinerary. This unforgettable activity last for over two hours and gives a visitor a chance to travel the secretive passages through the mangrove forests and see the ecology.
